Self Portrait with Scruff

20111211-174422.jpg

Up until two days ago, I was growing some sort of a beard for about two weeks. In my opinion, it looked the best on me about halfway through that stretch – about a week’s worth of growth.

This photo started out as a light test in a studio, and ended up as a finished product after some tweaks on my iPad. But better yet, who cares what the processing unit was. Or that it was processed at all.

And another reason, at least in the fashion industry, why do most men have the fashionably scruffy faces?

Roland Clyde Zank

Two great friends of mine, John Zank and Elizabeth Alters, had their baby boy early Thursday morning, September 22nd, 2011. His name is Roland Clyde Zank. Thus, I just had to take some newborn photos of him to help commemorate. John is the first of our group of friends from high school (and junior high!) to have a baby, so this is a milestone not just for him, but for all of us.

Wormwood Prophecy’s Story

20110925-133126.jpg

This group of guys has evolved their sound, their band members, and their technology prolifically since the days when I used to jam with Jon and Mat in a garage, making sound noise and drinking beer. When Jon Broadbent and Mathew Matsuki wanted to take their talents more seriously, they sought out the rest of the band, eventually adding Steven Nix, Victor Corrales, and Korie Hilliard, officially forming Wormwood Prophecy, an ever-changing and evolving band to the current.

Bros

Just a little brotherly love.

I’ve finally finished up this shoot. I really took my time when I shot this. I mostly kept quiet and just watched him watching her and back and forth. It helped me see what was in front of me just happen instead of trying to control it all. Just let it happen.

Crochet

I haven’t photographed any maternity shoots by myself, though I have seen a lot of it over the years. So, I’ve seen some photos I like, and I know what I wanted to stay away from; I think I got what I wanted out of this photograph. It’s classy, subtle, motherly, and domestic.

This was also my test shoot for my new lens, a Canon 17-40 f/4L, a lens that I bought off of a fellow photographer, Timothy Jay. I don’t think I can buy another non-L or super premium lens. After working with this lens for a couple shoots, nothing tops the L-series quality.

Keeping Myself Busy

I just got back from a wedding – back is sore, tired, feet are hurting. And through all that work, it feels so good to sit at your computer, review the photos, and know you have some great stuff to show off to them (though they’re still downloading…).

Recapping that shows that maybe I should make a short post about some of the shots (just a few maybe). That also reminds me how backlogged I am on other posts I want to make.

So here we have it; future topics on the BWhitlock Photoblog:

From School: Classic BW Portraiture, Photo Arts, Estabrook Workshop

Other: Weddings, Portrait Shoot from this summer (still to be shot…)
