“It Makes The Perfect Gift”

20111118-012221.jpg

It’s not even Thanksgiving and the decorations are already out. Big retailers are running Black Friday shop-til-you-drop-starting-at-midnight commercials, guaranteeing the lowest prices and even layaway. We are beckoned to “save” a little here yet spend the most in these four weeks than we did most of the year.

I’ve been bombarded with ads from Wal-Mart and Target, ads about spending on awesome toys for your husband and the kids so you can be that Super Mom that you hear about.

The Holiday Spending Season is upon us. It’s time to get my camera out. Some ideas are kicking around. I’ll see you on Black Friday.

Kershaw wins #20

Kershaw wins #20, originally uploaded by Robbie.

Though the decisive moment is perfect here in this photo, I actually like the effects put into place on this photograph. Sports photos don’t usually lend themselves to dramatic editing effects, but this one seems to work.

Note the photographer information under the image. This is a photo I found in the Flickr pool “Dodgers” while trying to find a group to join.

Florida Summer Clouds

Florida Summer Clouds, originally uploaded by bwhitlock55.

I’ve had a new-found appreciation of clouds and sky. The clouded, dramatic skies of the Florida rainy season are ever-changing, yet predictable.

Rugged Hollywood

20110512-092707.jpg

Today’s travels included Jax to Houston to Ontario, CA. Then grabbed a rental car, hung out for a minute and took a trip out to Hollywood and Beverly Hills. Here, we got out and wandered for a while in each spot, shot a lot of photos, bought a few things, and proclaimed how we couldn’t afford any of this (specifically on Rodeo Drive).

The photo above was achieved with a bit of imagination and luck on both our parts. Around the Kodak Theater on Hollywood Blvd, there is essentially a mall (like most of the area). There was a nice overlook walkway multiple-stories high the pointed right at the Hollywood sign; on these walkways were telescopes that required you to insert a quarter to use.

So, I used my pseudo-lofi Hipstatic app on my iPhone and (with Brittany’s guidance and curiosity) was able to shoot through the telescope and see the sign almost full-frame. I shot off several photographs, but this is the only one that saved since my phone died.

By shooting through something, it reminded me of how I shot through a TLR camera several years ago. With the telescope, I got the heavy vignette and semi-low glass quality, then ran it through Hipstamatic’s processes. Results as shown.

The results are very primitive and rugged, both like and unlike the area of Hollywood.

Also, on a side note, I’ve shot photographs exclusively on my phone so far today. I like it. And I’ve been so touristy, it’s funny.

Stormtroopers

The Rebels' new weapon

This guy’s photos are absolutely incredible and HILARIOUS. If you’re a Star Wars fan, or a photography fan, or a hilarity fan, go look. It’s a little inspiring too.

I Could Make a Collection of These

Silly people who don't like their photo taken.

I’ve been having this swelling interest of having a collection of images of people taking pictures. Something that’s also related, yet opposite of that idea is of people, namely Brittany, that don’t like having their picture taken. This is the kind if photos that I get of here most of the time. And I find them interesting.

365-Day Self Portrait Collage

I’ve come upon an idea that I think I want to work on. It involves a typology, self portrait, technology, and a little bit mocking narcissism all wrapped into one image. Well, 365 images serving as one.

The plan is to photograph myself using my front-facing camera in my iPhone once everyday, wearing whatever I have on including whatever I have. Whatever. I think the more odd the better.

It’s not just a memory image, either. It may not be entirely deep and meaningful, but I can see references to the “myspace self photo,” sort of a satire of it. Also the fact that it was used with the front facing camera of an iPhone seems pretty significant, as it’s a new piece of technology.

It’s sheer size and magnitude of all those images will also be pretty powerful. If I did this for a month, thirty photos just wouldn’t cut it. I’m imaging the final print to AT LEAST 30″ in the shorter side. Ideally mural size with each photo being roughly 1.5×2″. I’ve collected about four images so far.

And here’s an example of what one of the photos can be. Of course, it will be more spontaneous as the process goes on.

iPhone Camera Faux Panorama

I’ve been taking a lot of panorama photos lately, largely because of the all-inclusive view; and if you can do it well, it really separates you from the amateurs.

Another addition to a purist panorama is this faux panorama style I’ve stumbled upon. I came across this app that basically takes four photos* and arranges them automatically in a couple different shapes, one of which is all four next to each other horizontally. So if you pan ever so slightly between photos you get a rough non-overlapping panorama. Pretty edgy.

*by taking photos, it really seems to just take screenshots, because the volume overlay is evident in this shot. This is a little disappointing since it doesn’t take the camera’s full resolution, and because it can show these overlays.

Tree

Here’s a shot of a tree near the fort in St. Augustine. Because it’s a lone interestingly formed tree, it would serve as an iconic prop and composition piece for some photos. Posted here for archive.
